A Brief Expose` of My Theatrical Belief…
I have grown as an actor
and performer in the school of the Eastern European Theatre.
Following the rules of Stanislavski, M. Chekhov, L. Strasberg,
as well as those of my
professor K. Azarian, I have learned that stage performance
is not just acting, but a way
of living. It is dedication to “the people below” - the audience.
Performing, therefore,
has never been a job or profession to me. Acting is a gift, a noble
mission with which one
has been blessed and is obligated to spread throughout this world of ours.
As actors, we
are born with the destiny to Entertain the people. We serve them
giving them everything
they need, everything they ask for. But the inside secret, the question
the actor must ask
himself, is whether what the people ask for is really what they need?
This is what renders
the actor’s task a challenging responsibility. Thus his moral values
and human abilities,
his personal commitment and precious beliefs, and his selfless dedication
to the people
will all guide him in selecting and presenting the right decision.
It is then that the actor
“signs” a contract in the pursuit of becoming that image which the people
will believe in
and follow as their model for a way of living. So it is the actor
who can open the hidden
fields of our lives and make them visual. It is the actor who brings them
into reality with
his “magic” skills so that the people may see, feel and realize who they
are, how they are
living and how they might live better. Moreover, the actor truly teaches
by presenting both
sides - good and bad, right and wrong- still leaving the decision to the
consciousness of
the audience. The actor must bring forth wisdom bearing the full picture
of reality unto
our hearts, transforming our beliefs so that we may become fully human
in finding
empathy for one another.
Such a task is never easy, yet anyone who wishes to become an actor must
decide to do
and be nothing less. He must be disciplined and prepared for the sleepless
and relentless
work that will follow. He must be willing to sacrifice all. For there is
no black and white;
there are all the colors of the universe melted and separated, brightened
and flattened by
the power of the magic that the actor creates through his very own morals,
fantasies,
beliefs and aptitudes. The actor must lay himself in the arms of Real Life
and without
even hint of fear grab it, transform it and artistically create from it
a piece of drama filled
with desire, passion and hope. Funny or tragic, sad or cheerful, energetic
or melancholic,
the actor must accomplish his duty – to entertain and serve the people
at any time and in
any circumstance. But most of all, the actor must find and give that which
they really need
without taking from them.
The actor is the Fool of all times… Oh, Eternal Fool, who can fool
and be fooled!
But the Fool Can what he Knows and Knows what we Can’t. So, we need him
to Know
how we Can, while he needs us to Show how he Can what we Don’t Know. And
in this
closed circle it is the actor always taking the Blame… Oh, Eternal Fool!
And we – the Credit...
